Truly a Gift From Nature.

The juniper tree thrives across Navajo land, a cornerstone of our people’s way of life.

Its branches bear tiny blue and white berries, no larger than small grapes, scattered like treasures.

Fall to the ground.

When these berries fall to the ground, small creatures... ants, beetles, and other critters... peel away the outer skin.

Smaller critters then consume the seed’s nutrient-rich core, leaving behind a hollow shell.

This is where the journey of the Ghost Bead begins.

Critters And The Berry

Gather Them Up

Our Navajo artisans carefully gather these discarded seeds.

The critters bore a hole in one side to extract the nutrients...
our people thread a hole through the other, transforming the seed into a bead.

Strung together, these beads become stunning jewelry, each piece carrying a connection to the land.

Good Medicine

In the 1500s, when Spanish settlers arrived, they brought unfamiliar diseases that harmed our Navajo People.

Healers turned to juniper berries... Brewing them into a tea believed to ward off sickness.

The beads, born from these same berries, became known as Ghost Beads...

Powerful “medicine” thought to protect against evil and even death itself.
