Navajo (Diné) Winter Stories

Navajo Historian, Wally Brown, teaches about Winter stories and the “shoe game”.

These stories are about the animals and the role they played in the organization of Mother earth. These stories are only told in the winter time when the animals are hibernating.

These stories are rich with symbolism. The story of the Hero “Twins” who are actually not twins. These two boys were on a quest to visit their Father. Their father is the creator and he gave them tools to fight the monsters that were plaguing our Diné. They are given everything they desire. The boys come back and protect their people.

This is a Navajo parable. Wally teaches we are all on a journey back to our creator. We have tools to fight these monsters. And we need to help one another just like the Heros...
