When the U.S. Military began the campaign against the Navajo; it was a surprise attack. Many of our Navajo people were killed in that first skirmish.

While they thought they were safe because they had heard peace talks were still underway they didn’t make any preparations for battle. The attack was indiscriminate and women and children were targeted. Those who did not escape were either killed or taken to Fort Sumner.

This account is about the ones who escaped. Wally shares his family story of his great great grandmother who had to run for her life with her infant daughter and others.

A story of perseverance and the will to survive against the odds.

Enjoy this unique view from the perspective of our Navajo people in Part 2 of our 4 part series.
