In the traditional teachings of our Navajo people, a medicine man must climb to the top of one of the sacred mountains to gather mountain soil.
When he is up there, he makes an offering to the holy people. When he is on the mountain, he can see what the holy people see.
He is higher than all life — no birds, no insects, no plants… When he gathers his mountain soil, he has made the sacrifice and purified himself for the journey to the top of the mountain.
It is said he has the authority from the holy people to return and help his people. He has to keep his medicine bundle and walk the beauty path, the straight path.
In this week's video, Wally shares this teaching as he received it from his grandfather, “Laughing Medicine Man.”
