In the traditional teachings of our Navajo people, there is no such thing as a person who is not recognized as Navajo simply because they are not full blood.
Wally shares the beautiful and powerful teaching that any child born to a Navajo mother or Navajo father is Navajo. This truth reaches back through the generations — to grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who come after.
It also reaches forward to those who were adopted into the clan or taken into our families long ago.
Our people have always embraced those who needed a family. When captives were brought among us, after time they often chose to stay and became part of the Navajo way of life. This is how clans like the Spaniard clan and the Mexican clan were formed. We do not turn our backs on our own children.
Wally also reminds us that in the traditional way everything is connected through the sacred number four - four elements, four races of people, four blood types, and four strands of DNA. We are all related in ways we are only beginning to understand.
